As mentioned in our last post, we’ve had the opportunity to test several new Usenet providers this summer. So far we haven’t run across any new services (launched in 2011) quite as impressive as Usenet Central (UNC). Not too surprising as the service is new but the team has been around for awhile. Which should help Usenet Central grow without some of the normal hurdles that new services face. With a number of positives including high retention, SSL, 50 connections and a custom version of GrabIt with the premium Usenet search feature.
Usenet Central launched earlier this summer and currently supports 1.037 days of binary retention across some 100,000+ newsgroups. With free 256-bit SSL available to all members. We tested the service last week and were impressed with the performance and completion. While 50 connections are available we maxed out 25 mbps using 10 connections. In addition Usenet Central offers subscribers a custom version of GrabIt newsreader. The client is always free but this version is already set up for UNC and includes the premium search feature. An added value of $2.49 a month. Usenet Central also has a simple web image viewer.
Usenet Central newsgroup accounts range from 6 GB a month up to unlimited access. The unlimited Usenet plan offers the best value. It is priced about a $1 higher than the competition but comes with the GrabIt search feature. Give UNC a try and let us know what you think @NewsgroupRevs. Take full advantage of their 14 day, 15 GB free Usenet Central trial to test the service along with GrabIt and the Usenet search feature.
